Processing of Alphonso Mango for 2012 season has commenced, 15 days later than in 2011. Indian growers are speculating that the new crop will yield similar quantities to last year - which was deemed poor and caused prices to surge. Alphonso continues to be the premium Mango of choice worldwide and the 2011 season provided limited supply against growing demand. This industrial uptake and intense demand in the fresh market caused extremely high price levels for Puree, and saw these high prices offered as an incentive for buyers to work with producers to supply ‘’less than 100% Alphonso’’ product below the market price. With the same eager customer base looking to make savings in the current economic climate, producers are expected to offer this alternative product again in 2012. The Alphonso and Sindhura Puree blends caused a widespread discrepancy in pricing during 2011 and are expected to do the same this season.
